Oh companies. Relationships are SO much easier than you make them. In fact, there are only a few things that you need to do in order to make your customers significantly happier. Or rather, there are a few things you must stop doing and saying that will change your customers’ experiences drastically.

I’ve compiled a short list for you (though there are more). Here are some things you need to stop doing and saying:

1. “It’s our policy.”

Now, you may use this and think: “Why is this wrong? It enables a fair way to treat customers across the board.”

The problem with trying to treat customers the same across the board is that not every situation is cut and dried. And, frankly, some policies are antiquated and outdated. The moment you have to let a customer down by saying “it’s our policy,” you are failing that customer.

And yes, I know that you don’t want your customer service staff running all amok with bleeding hearts and breaking your bank, but that is why you need to train them properly and empower them to help your customers. A good customer service policy is to:

a. train your agents on multiple scenarios and then;

b. give them a buffer allowance each month and;

c. give them all sorts of ways to help the customer instead of shutting down the conversation.

If they have a certain budget to play with each month where they can make a decision on whether to give a customer a break or take a return marked “no refunds”, they can use their training to decipher a reasonable response and then be empowered to make it. Here is an example:

A customer calls their cell phone company and says, “My bill is outrageous! I didn’t realize that going over my data would cost me an extra $200! I can’t afford this!” The agent then can walk through a customer’s bill and figure out if the mistake was made in earnest and then either undo the $200 OR adjust the bill a smaller amount (maybe cut it in half), but talk the customer into a more robust ongoing data plan (which can help the company make the money up in the long run).

Of course, if a customer doesn’t know what to expect, this is an issue in itself. Which leads me to #2.

2. “It was in your contract.”

Newsflash: nobody actually reads contracts. I’m not sure why anyone uses a big long legalese document to give customers upfront information about a service. It’s the worst way to present information in the universe. You may as well write it in Sanskrit on a stone tablet.

I’m not saying your customers have no responsibility to read what they sign, but when you are excitedly signing up for a new service or website or whatever, the last thing you do is to sit and read a long document. And the salesperson moving the sale through doesn’t really give you much of a chance either.

Why not present limitations and terms and conditions in a readable, fun manner? A great example of turning boring, mandated information into something people will engage in is Virgin America’s awesome in-flight safety video. Everyone knows that when those safety videos come on, our eyes glaze over and we focus on the book or magazine or anything else. But not when you are on a Virgin Flight:

Right? You don’t have to go to that level of production, but why not make it readable and enjoyable? This way, you will never have to say, “It’s in your contract.” Your customers will know. In fact, they may even be able to sing it back to you.

3. “See our answer here [with link].”

Why not just talk to me? Seriously. If I ask something that is too long for a tweet, answer me with a few tweets. That’s cool.

Even if it doesn’t go as smoothly as above, it’s a MUCH better interaction. I can hang up the phone with a bit more information and reset my expectations. I also feel taken care of even if the representative couldn’t give me a definitive answer.

4. [Insert Lame Company Excuse Here]

Just recently, we had a ISP tell us that their service was bad because one of their partners (the people who owned the fibre) were playing dirty.

Really? I couldn’t give a damn. Fix our service. I don’t need to get involved in your business drama. I’ve just paid you $300 to get my internet installed. I’m not your mediator. Guess what happened? We canceled, asked for a refund, then went to the partner in question. They seemed to have the upper hand and get things done. We wish we knew that in the beginning.

Your company woes are YOUR company woes…and quite often they are the result of bad decisions/deals you’ve made (short-term thinking). Your customers don’t care, nor should they. They just want to get the stuff they paid for. Don’t make excuses. Fix it. If you can’t fix it, own up to it and refund your customers. Apologize and hope that they will forgive you and come back when you’ve fixed your stuff.

The customer experience should be seamless and simple. The mess and duct tape and hoops behind the scenes? Invisible to the customer’s eye.

5. [Silence]

It’s late 2013 and 72% of customers expect a response within the hour on Twitter from your brand after they complain. And it doesn’t really matter if it’s during business hours or not.

I, personally, have a black list of companies I will no longer buy from after getting radio silence to a concern or complaint. I’m sure I’m not alone.

Even the most angry complaints can be handled. People are just upset and need to be heard. One of the best pieces of advice I ever heard was to respond to an angry complaint like this:

A. Identify
B. Apologize
C. Assist

Identifying completely diffuses a situation. Trust me on this one. Even if you can’t help someone, just identifying and apologizing will help. And that customer will feel a bit bad for blowing up at you online. If they don’t come back, they’ll certainly tell the story differently. This time, you’ll be cool…not a jerk that doesn’t listen.

San Francisco Celebrates 75th Anniversary Of Golden Gate Bridge

Last night I spent a few hours building my schedule for OpenCo in San Francisco next week. As I note on my site, it wasn’t easy – there are 135 or so organizations opening their doors to the public, and only 12 possible time slots to fill. It’s like going to a concert where scores of your favorite bands are playing, but there are only 12 stages. At any given time, you’re going to miss 11 of your favorite bands.

So I studied the companies carefully. I wanted to make sure I had an element of serendipity – I didn’t want to only see companies I had heard of. I wanted variety – I spend a fair bit of time thinking about adtech, media, and the internet, so I wanted to see some manufacturers, retail, and non-profits, for example. And I wanted to explore the interplay of the physical and the digital, which is the basis of a book I’m working on.

I’m quite happy with the list I ended up with (you can see it here), but I’m also satisfied by the process I went through – I considered more than 75 companies. I visited their websites, read about their missions and visions, and considered how they might fit into my two-day experience. Along the way, I was struck by some clear patterns driving this innovative ecosystem, which I thought worth sharing here. Some might be obvious, but it’s worth tying a well known trend to facts on the ground – and a thriving startup is a very good “fact on the ground.” Here they are:

1. “Making” is making a comeback. Rickshaw Bagworks makes bags, but they make them in a very “OpenCo” fashion – they can afford to be bespoke, because they leverage modern information tools, and the company has a deep held set of beliefs about the “why” of their craft: “we share a strong set of humanistic, environmental and social values that guide the way we conduct every aspect of our business.” The same could be said for TCHO Chocolates (founded by the folks behind Wired), sex toy maker CRAVE (a data driven, women-first business), dry goods maker Everlane, and Lit Motors, which is trying to reinvent the automobile. All of these businesses are manufacturers, but they feel like Internet startups.

2. “Sharing” is a robust business model. I’ll be visiting We Work, a shared workspace that values “doing what you love,” but there are oodles of others on the OpenCo lineup, includingOtherlabHatch TodayRocketspaceMad Valley, and more. The idea of “incubation” is as old as the Internet, but now it’s far more open – these spaces include access to expensive tools, people, software, and knowledge that previously were kept locked up inside institutions, inaccessible to a smart entrepreneur who lacked resources. These organizations realize that opening up means more innovation and more shared success.

Besides shared space and tools, there is of course the now well-understood idea of sharing consumer time and resources. Again, plenty of companies express this concept – most famously airbnb, but also yerdleSidecar, and RidePal. All of these companies would be impossible with the Internet, but they are also more than just “Internet startups.” They are part of a movement toward a new social contract between people – a contract made possible through data and networks.

3. The old school is learning new tricks. If you’re a patron of the arts, you might think innovation is not your cup of tea. You’d be wrong. SF SymphonySF OperaACT, and SF MOMA, where I’ll be visiting, are all “OpenCos,” among many other arts organizations. All of them are re-inventing themselves to adapt to a new world. I think what we consider to be “The Arts” will be dramatically different ten years from now, and we can trace the origin of these organizations evolution to the era we live in today.

4. Transparency makes markets. The more information that is available in a particular market, the more robust that market grows. At least, that seems to be the lesson of a group of companies at this year’s OpenCo. The aforementioned Everlane bases its business on “radical transparency” around its supply chains, Chairish makes markets in home decor,HomeJoy reinvents the cleaning service, Hotel Tonight reveals real time inventory in the lodging business, as does Stubhub for tickets, Betabrand makes markets in brand prototyping and creation, Eventbrite is – thought of another way – a real time Google Maps for human gatherings. None of these businesses existed ten years ago, most didn’t exist five years ago. Why are they here now? Because data and networks set information free.

5. Where physical meets digital, value is created. Related to many of these trends, but worthy of its own mention, is the idea of physical objects being turned into data, and in the process, becoming something new. That’s the magic behind sharing of cars, homes, and other hard goods, but it’s also what’s driving the reimagination of health (Rock Health), construction (Project Frog), Energy (Net Power & Light), and many others.

As you can see, there are so many fascinating companies reinventing our economy, and all of them are OpenCos – they want to change the world for the better, they want to open their doors to new ideas and new partnerships, and they want to share their ideas with you. The above mail is not from a guy who couldn’t do things. He’s considered the most brilliant among his age group boys… He’s a genius in most complicated of subjects – to at-least few of us who are reading this article. He’s done wonders in his middle school & had a grand entry to his high school.

And yet, he’s tensed in his +2 results???

Yes. Results are something more than ample to burgle your fortnight’s sleeps… And much more ample to leave you tensed, homesick & of course highly depressed when they are bad.

The above made him think what I’d have had felt while discontinuing my studies 4 years ago…
And his mail made me think why we generally think to quit?
Of course any new thought I implement immediately, I did a little research and the results I got were too shocking. Statistics show that every five minutes, someone, somewhere in India, attempts suicide. This makes suicide the third major cause of death. Also, annually more than 1,00,000 people commit suicide in India, of which one-thirds are youth. Diverse backgrounds, diverse goals and diverse opinions! But same decision!

Students in India are taking education seriously, but the suicides are alarming – especially for students. The main cause was the pressure to do well in school, and the pressure was not only from parents, but also professors in universities and colleges. Most students commit suicide after failing exams.

When Rancho stated the statistics in a movie “3 Idiots” when Joy Lobo committed a suicide because of project rejection, i made a research if it is true that one India’s students commit suicide every hour, but research shows that it is more than that. There are 5,857 students committed suicide in 2006 and the figure for 2005 was 5,138. Similarly, in 2004, 5,610 students committed suicide in India alone.

Today, the youth in India form one of the most vulnerable groups, who, on the one hand are expected to be the leaders, the backbone of tomorrow’s India, while on the other hand, are a brow-beaten and baffled cluster. There is an imbalance between the youth population and the limited opportunities for admission in schools and colleges, and specifically in professional courses. This puts the youth under great pressure. First class and second class are hardly adequate results anymore. Parents are helpless too, as both public and private institutions have caused economic burden to them. If you think getting admission is the toughest thing that youth can ever experience, rethink! Placements are another hell. You need to get everything right. And even after getting placed, the comparison in relation to the pay received, causes all the more pain. A person with the pleasure of working but with limited salary is certainly not welcome in this society. People have come to a point where they are ready to trade their work pleasure for money. Tough deadlines and hectic work atmosphere have taken the lives of many youth.
Recent studies said that about 40 percent are adolescents. At least 125 people aged 29 years or below are committing suicide every day and most victims are college students or younger. This is alarming news for teachers and parents. Upon learning the educational system of India, the system is based on rote learning and memorization, with a strong emphasis on scoring high marks, which is why most students are handling academic pressures
Friendships and relationships have also played equal parts in this gamble for life. Youth are too sensitive to sort any sort of relationship problem. The problem may be anything; fight with best friends, bitter misunderstanding with girlfriend/ boyfriend followed by an even bitter break-up, family issues with parents fighting over their lives or over financial issues. But the youth are greatly affected. They bundle up all these grievances in their hearts and eventually give their hearts a complete rest so they will never have to face the same, again.
All the above are the general criteria, which, which makes you thinks of suicides, or shall we call it as “quit” from our Responsibilities. But there are issues due to which, your near & dear ones are made to suffer. Your QUITting from your responsibilities make our people think more & more about you. They make your Beloved one’s life as hell & make them run here & there. If they are your OLD PARENTS, their lives would get still more miserable…
I’ve seen my good old Aunt, or she’s even more than a God Mother for me, suffering after her grown up son’s death (he didn’t commit suicide, it was a car accident) for years together.
Here I wish to give another example – Jia Khan, a beautiful & charming young lady in her twenties committed suicide. We do not actually know what happened, but one poor guy is charged for that. He’ll be made run from one place to another for that.

I am blaming all. There are plenty of youth who have followed their heart to be what they wanted to be. But the fact that this suicide virus is taking away the lives of millions of youth is alarming. Something has to be done to cripple it. In battle between the thirst to have their dream life and the urge to fulfill the expectation of the society, many are shattered. While a very few regain their stand, the rest take the ultimate decision of ending their lives.
Even reading these examples, you wish to quit, I can’t help…
But think twice, thrice, ten times or even hundreds, thousands & crores of times, because…
You QUIT, not only from your responsibilities or your tensions, but also this world. Your beloved’s lives would be miserable thinking about you, the moments spent with you & most pricking of all – facing the society & its question: WHY DID HE/SHE DIE?

When you have the guts to face the pain of ending your lives in a single moment, why aren’t you having the same guts for a moment longer to face the battle? If a person is disturbed, all that has to be done is just talk.
Words can do wonders, even help see beyond the mist.

Even the great Indo-Pak issues could be resolved in a single discussion, if it is meant for so…
